Calling All Dads: Moms Tell Shutterfly What They Really Want for Valentine’s Day

Jan 30, 2008

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Jan 30, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Shutterfly, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFLY), the leading Internet-based social expression and personal publishing service, today announced the results of a recent consumer survey revealing what moms really want for Valentine’s Day: heartfelt photo keepsakes and photo cards. Eight out of ten moms surveyed (83%) hope to receive a personalized Valentine card featuring a favorite family photo instead of a store bought greeting; and when asked about their “best gift ever received on Valentine’s Day,” the #1 response was a photo keepsake (25%).

Have the traditional Valentine’s Day gifts of yesterday become passe? According to moms, the answer is yes: flowers (15%), lingerie (4%) and chocolates (3%) were the bottom vote getters. Many moms expressed dissatisfaction when they received “cheap candy in heart-shaped felt boxes especially when he knew I was trying to diet.”

In addition to putting Shutterfly gifts at the top of their own Valentine wish lists, 83% of moms surveyed say that personalized cards and photo keepsakes are their favorite gifts to give to sweethearts; and nearly half also shop for Grandma (their own mom) on Valentine’s Day (48%).

“At Shutterfly we are inspired by the creative, personalized Valentine’s Day cards and gifts that our customers give to loved ones each year,” said Kathryn Olson, chief marketing officer of Shutterfly. “So it wasn’t surprising when our survey showed that chocolate and flowers are taking a back seat to lasting gifts that preserve and celebrate special memories, year after year.”

This year, moms intend to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their families. Mom’s idea of the perfect Valentine’s Day is to spend the day doing projects with her kids (34%) and then have a special dinner with dad (35%).
