Shutterfly Announces More Ways to Personalize Holiday Greetings

Nov 06, 2006

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Nov 06, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) — As more families across the country plan to share their favorite memory on a photo holiday card this year, Shutterfly, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFLY), an Internet-based social expression and personal publishing service, today announced its new Photo Collage Cards, including 15 multi-photo layouts with up to nine pictures per card. Shutterfly offers consumers many creative choices for their holiday cards, with more than 450 greeting card styles and 175 4×8 photo card options. Shutterfly also enhanced its card creation process to maximize users’ creativity with the option to write a personal greeting (e.g. “Happy Holidays from the Smiths”) on the front of their cards, using added font choices and colors.

“This is the third year I’ve made my Christmas cards through Shutterfly, because nowhere else can match the quality,” said Shutterfly customer, Kristin M. of Colorado. “I was thrilled to see the option to add more family photos to the front of my cards, because I no longer need to narrow it down to just one. It’s great to know we can share so many of our favorite pictures with our family and friends in Chicago and New York, who we’ll miss this holiday season.”

According to 1,000 participants of a recent national OmniTel telephone survey conducted by GfK NOP on behalf of Shutterfly, photo card popularity is on the rise with nearly 60 percent of women looking forward to receiving personalized photo cards this holiday season, up from 41 percent in the Company’s 2005 survey. The survey also showed that more than half of the women who send holiday cards on behalf of their families are motivated to do so because “it’s the best way to show family members and friends how much (we) care about them” (55 percent).

Also according to the survey, women choose their greeting card company based on delivery speed; followed closely by the ability to customize the text on their cards. Shutterfly can help friends and family members send and receive cards quickly through its “direct mail” card delivery service. Customers can avoid the inconvenience of purchasing stamps, addressing and sealing envelopes and making a special trip to the post office, by uploading their address books (e.g. from Palm or Outlook) to Shutterfly; the Company will then print, seal, stamp and mail Greeting Cards within 48 hours after purchase. Users can have all cards printed with one personalized message, or can customize each card with a special message for the intended recipient.

“Shutterfly’s photo cards give our customers a unique way to reconnect with family and friends during the holidays, and by using our card mailing service they’ll have more time to get to their long list of holiday ‘to-dos’ instead of spending that time addressing, stamping and mailing cards,” said Jeffrey Housenbold, CEO of Shutterfly. “Senders can make professional-looking cards in minutes and recipients can enjoy them a few days later.”
