Shutterfly Names Neil Day as Senior Vice President & Chief Technology Officer

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., May 27, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Shutterfly, Inc. (NASDAQ:SFLY), the leading Internet-based social expression and personal publishing service, today announced the appointment of Neil Day as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. Mr. Day will be responsible for Shutterfly’s technology strategy and execution and will lead the company’s web engineering, products, services and e-commerce engineering, Internet operations, quality assurance and program management teams. Mr. Day will report to Shutterfly’s President and CEO, Jeffrey Housenbold.

Mr. Day brings more than 25 years of experience in software development, systems architecture and technology operations to Shutterfly. Most recently, Mr. Day served as Senior Vice President and CTO at Sears Holdings and was responsible for architecture, technology strategy and software development with an emphasis on e-commerce applications. Prior to Sears Holdings, Mr. Day was Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer at MediaMaster, Inc. where he was responsible for product strategy & design, product development and technical operations. He was part of the founding team of Walmart.com, and was responsible for development and operations. His previous experiences also include CTO at Velosel, and CTO of Homewarehouse.com which was acquired by Walmart.com.

Neil Day received his Bachelors Degree in Cognitive Science from the University of Rochester.

In related news, the Company has also hired Benjamin Weitzel as Vice President of Customer Insights & Analysis. Mr. Weitzel will be responsible for leveraging objective data and analytical modeling to provide insights that support product and marketing decisions. Mr. Weitzel will report to Senior Vice President and CFO, Mark Rubash.

Mr. Weitzel brings more than 20 years of analytics experience to his role at Shutterfly. Mr. Weitzel joined Shutterfly from eBay where he served as Sr. Director, Marketing Analytics. During his 9-year tenure at eBay, he led the analytics that optimized Internet marketing, advertising, and loyalty initiatives. In addition to marketing optimization, Mr. Weitzel also built eBay’s Internet marketing tracking infrastructure to support one of the largest Internet advertising budgets. Previously, Mr. Weitzel managed marketing and sales analytics at Pacific IBM and Safeway Beverages. He also managed the optimization analytics for Dole Food Company’s product development efforts for beverages and fresh produce.

Mr. Weitzel earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science & Engineering from University of California at Davis and Masters of Science in Demography at University of Southern California.

Additionally, the Company today announced the promotion of Peter Elarde to Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer and Dan McCormick to Vice President & General Manager of the Products and Services Business.

Mr. Elarde will be responsible for all facets of the Company’s marketing efforts including customer and brand marketing, ecommerce, product management, user experience, creative services, and corporate communications. Mr. Elarde will replace Kathryn Olson who is leaving the Company to pursue other interests. Mr. Elarde will report to Shutterfly President and CEO, Jeffrey Housenbold. Peter Elarde joined Shutterfly in 2001 and most recently served as Vice President of the Services Business and Vice President of Product Marketing. Prior to joining Shutterfly, Mr. Elarde held various management positions with Achieva.com, Tom Snyder Productions, The Learning Company, and Bain & Company.

Mr. Elarde holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Yale College and a Master of Business Administration degree from Stanford University.

Dan McCormick has been promoted to Vice President & General Manager of the Products and Services Business. Mr. McCormick will be responsible for driving the overall strategic direction of Shutterfly’s consumer facing businesses. Mr. McCormick will continue to report to Shutterfly President and CEO, Jeffrey Housenbold. Dan McCormick joined Shutterfly in 2005 and most recently served as Vice President of the Products Business and Vice President of Strategy. Prior to joining Shutterfly, Mr. McCormick held various positions at Network Appliance (NASDAQ:NTAP) including Director of Product Marketing and Director of Corporate Development. Prior to his tenure with Network Appliance, Mr. McCormick served media, entertainment and retail clients in the strategy group at Accenture (NYSE:ACN).

Mr. McCormick holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Babson College and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Harvard University.

On June 15, 2009, Mr. Day will receive an equity grant of 200,000 restricted stock units pursuant to an inducement restricted stock unit grant that is not under a stockholder approved plan but is pursuant to a Nasdaq approved exception. The restricted stock units will vest annually over a three-year period, subject to Mr. Day’s continued employment.
