“Shutterfly’s mission is and has always been to help people share life’s joy, and this summer, we’re celebrating the places in our country where joy is happening,” said Heather Maddan, Chief Storyteller for Shutterfly. “People take more photos when they’re happy and our goal is to help them do more with those photos. We know that online social photo sharing is becoming increasingly common, but believe some images deserve more than just a ‘ like’ on Facebook. This summer, Shutterfly wants to help people share and preserve their joy in a more meaningful way by turning those pictures into captivating photo book stories.”

Shutterfly’s Ten Most Joyous Cities in America 2011

The ranking of the Ten Most Joyous Cities in America 2011 was determined by Shutterfly’s Joy Meter, a barometer of happy occasions – weddings, births and graduations – coupled with photo sharing per capita. The Top Ten includes:

  1. New York, NY
  2. Baton Rouge, LA
  3. New Orleans, LA
  4. Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, FL
  5. Lafayette, IN
  6. Greenwood-Greenville, MS
  7. Lafayette, LA
  8. Corpus Christi, TX
  9. Santa Barbara, CA
  10. Boston, MA

At http://www.shutterfly.com/enjoysummer, consumers can view how these cities scored on each of the joy criteria, find out where their city ranks and then post Shutterfly’s Joy Meter to personal websites or share on Facebook. Visitors are also invited to upload a photo of their most joyful moment for a special deal on photo books, and begin sharing their joy with those around them. Finally, the enJOY Summer microsite will feature tips for making the most of photos from Shutterfly’s Chief Storyteller, Heather Maddan, who will also be spreading the word in person to some of the country’s Most Joyous Cities.

“As a mom, I know that often photos of joyous occasions sit dormant on computers, never seeing the light of day,” said Maddan. “It’s my mission to help bring those stories to life through photo books.”

Survey Says: Vacations Are More Joyous Than Births

Coupled with its Joy Meter ranking of the most joyous cities, Shutterfly conducted an online survey about joyous occasions and photo taking with 1,000 adults. The survey confirmed that people take more photos when they’re happy; sixty-five percent of respondents agreed with the following statement: “The more joyous the occasion, the more photos I want to take to remember it by.” Fifty-nine percent said they wish they had more photos of the joyous occasions in their lives, and 42 percent reported that they feel guilty they’re not doing more to preserve memories.

Vacations beat out births for the most photographed occasions: the top five most joyous moments of respondents’ lives are vacations (57 percent); birth of a child/children (49 percent); winter holidays (46 percent); the person’s own wedding (43 percent); and milestone birthdays (33 percent).
